Deeply saddened by her absence and thinking of the fragility of human life, Black thought to himself, “How sad it would be if a name should be called from the Lamb’s Book of Life, and that person should not be there to respond!”
He searched his hymnbooks for a song that captured this specific thought but found none. Returning home, Black sat down at his piano and penned all three verses and the soaring melody in just a few minutes, stating later that the words were given to him directly by the Master.
