The Scriptural Foundation
The inspiration for this timeless hymn is drawn from the powerful teaching of Jesus in Matthew 7:24-25 (NKJV):
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”

Historical Context
Written by Edward Mote (1797–1874), a cabinet maker turned pastor, these lyrics were penned during his walk to work one morning in 1834. Mote wanted to write a hymn about the “Gracious Experience of a Christian,” capturing the reality that our hope is not built on our feelings or circumstances (“the sweetest frame”), but wholly on the finished work of Jesus. For nearly two centuries, it has served as a cornerstone of faith for believers worldwide.
