Experience the restorative and gentle spirit of “Just As I Am” in this peaceful instrumental arrangement. This rendition is crafted to provide a worshipful atmosphere for reflection, centering on the truth that we are invited to the feet of Jesus exactly as we are—broken, burdened, and beloved.
The Scriptural Foundation
This hymn is a powerful melodic response to the proclamation of John the Baptist in John 1:29:
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’”
The lyrics emphasize the finished work of Christ, the “Lamb of God,” whose blood was shed to “cleanse each spot” and break every barrier between the soul and its Creator.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Written in 1835 by Charlotte Elliott, “Just As I Am” was born out of a season of deep physical weakness and spiritual struggle. Charlotte was an invalid for much of her life, and on a day when she felt particularly useless and frustrated by her limitations, she began to doubt her standing with God.
A visiting preacher, Dr. Caesar Malan, famously asked her if she had peace with God. When she confessed she didn’t know how to find it, he told her, “Come to Him just as you are.” Those words unlocked her heart. She penned these verses to help others realize that God does not require us to “clean ourselves up” before coming to Him; He receives us in our “fightings and fears” and provides everything we need.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
2
Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
3
Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
4
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
5
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
6
Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
7
Just as I am, of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
