The Promise of a Beautiful Shore
In times of transition or grief, our hearts naturally long for the “land that is fairer than day.” This instrumental rendition of “In The Sweet By And By” offers a sanctuary of peace, inviting you to look past current sorrows toward the eternal promise of rest. Let the gentle melody remind you that by faith, we can see that beautiful shore afar.
The Scriptural Foundation
The heart of this hymn is anchored in the comforting words of Jesus in John 14:2 (NKJV):
“In My Fatherās house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
It serves as a melodic reminder that our earthly journey leads to a bountiful Father who has already prepared a dwelling place for His childrenāa place where “spirits shall sorrow no more.”
Historical Context
Written by Sanford F. Bennett in 1868, this hymn was born out of a moment of friendship. Bennettās friend, Joseph Webster, was prone to bouts of depression. One day, when Webster was feeling particularly low, Bennett told him, “It will be all right by and by.” Inspired by that phrase, Bennett penned these lyrics in just thirty minutes, creating one of the most beloved songs of hope in Christian history.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
Thereās a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.
Refrain
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
2
We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.
3
To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.
