This classic hymn is a lyrical tapestry of biblical titles for God, most notably the “Ancient of Days” (Daniel 7:9) and the “Incarnate Word” (John 1:14). It serves as a rhythmic prayer for:

The Story Behind the Hymn
The true authorship of “Come Thou Almighty King” remains a mystery, though it first appeared in a leaflet bound into some copies of George Whitefield’s Collection of Hymns for Social Worship around 1757.
Interestingly, it was written to the same meter as the British National Anthem (“God Save the King”). During the American Revolution, it is said that a group of British soldiers entered a church and demanded the congregation sing “God Save the King.” Instead, the congregation boldly sang these words—”Come Thou Almighty King”—pledging their ultimate loyalty to the King of Kings.
