Known affectionately in her hometown of Melrose, Scotland, as “The Sunbeam” due to her tireless work among the poor and sick, Elizabeth lived a quiet, humble life marked by physical frailty. She wrote this hymn just one year before her death at the young age of 38.

Elizabeth wrote out of her deep personal experience of finding a spiritual “home within the wilderness” amidst life’s heavy physical trials. The text was published posthumously in 1872 in The Family Treasury magazine. A few years later, the renowned American composer Frederick C. Maker set her text to the beautiful, solemn tune “ST. CHRISTOPHER,” creating the beloved masterpiece sung in churches across Christendom today.
