The Love of God: A Deep Meditation on His Measureless Grace (Romans 8:35) | Instrumental
A Love That Drains the Ocean Dry
There is no depth too deep and no star too high that the love of God cannot reach. This instrumental rendition of “The Love of God” (The Love of God is Greater Far) invites you into a space of profound wonder. Whether you are feeling “bowed down with care” or simply standing in awe of His creation, let these soul-stirring notes remind you that His love is the anchor that shall forevermore endure.
The Scriptural Foundation
The inspiration for this timeless hymn is deeply rooted in the triumphant assurance of Romans 8:35 (NKJV):
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”
Just as the hymn declares, nothing in all of creation—neither the lowest hell nor the highest star—can separate the “erring child” from a Father who has reconciled them through His Son. It is a love that is truly “rich and pure, measureless and strong.”
Historical Context
The story of this hymn is as measureless as its lyrics. While Frederick M. Lehman (1868–1953) wrote the first two stanzas in 1917, the legendary third stanza has a mysterious and moving origin. It was found inscribed on the wall of a patient’s room in a psychiatric hospital after they passed away. Those words were actually traced back to a Jewish poem, Haddamut, written by Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai in 1096. It serves as a timeless testament that God’s love is understood by the broken and the blessed alike.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.
Refrain
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
