The story of this hymn is as measureless as its lyrics. While Frederick M. Lehman (1868–1953) wrote the first two stanzas in 1917, the legendary third stanza has a mysterious and moving origin. It was found inscribed on the wall of a patient’s room in a psychiatric hospital after they passed away. Those words were actually traced back to a Jewish poem, Haddamut, written by Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai in 1096. It serves as a timeless testament that God’s love is understood by the broken and the blessed alike.
