The Hopes and Fears of All the Years
In the midst of a busy world, there is a “deep and dreamless sleep” where the most wondrous gift was given. This instrumental rendition of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” invites you to find stillness in the dark streets where the Everlasting Light shines. Let the soul-stirring melody remind you that Christ still enters in wherever “meek souls will receive Him,” bringing peace that transcends our understanding.
The Scriptural Foundation
The inspiration for this beloved Christmas carol is anchored in the ancient prophecy of Micah 5:2:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”
It serves as a beautiful reminder that God often chooses the “little” and the “still” places to reveal His greatest glories. The hymn further reflects the promise of Emmanuel—God with us—the Light that no darkness can overcome.
Historical Context
Written by Phillips Brooks (1835–1893), an Episcopal priest, the lyrics were inspired by a journey he took to the Holy Land. On Christmas Eve in 1865, Brooks traveled on horseback from Jerusalem to Bethlehem and participated in the midnight service. The “stillness” he experienced that night in the actual town of Bethlehem stayed with him, leading him to pen these verses for his Sunday School children three years later.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
2
For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together,
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth!
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
How silently, how silently,
The wondrous Gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His Heav’n.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
4
O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel!
