The Scriptural Foundation
The lyrics of this beloved prayer hymn highlight the incredible privilege of casting our daily anxieties directly onto Christ, pulling deeply from foundational biblical promises:
1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
Matthew 11:28: Mirroring the sweeping promise of the refrain: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Hebrews 4:15: Reminding the believer that we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was “tempted and tried” in every way, yet without sin.
Historical Context & Origin
Written and composed in 1893 by Elisha Albright Hoffman (1839–1929), “I Must Tell Jesus” was born out of a real-world pastoral counseling crisis. Hoffman was a dedicated Presbyterian minister serving a humble congregation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. One afternoon, he visited the home of a parishioner who had been completely overwhelmed by severe domestic and emotional trials.
Sinking into deep despair, the weeping woman cried out to Hoffman, “Oh, what shall I do? What shall I do?”
Hoffman gently reminded her of her ultimate spiritual resource, saying, “You cannot bear these burdens alone. You must tell Jesus all of your troubles.” The woman sat in silence for a moment, and then her face lit up as she exclaimed, “Yes! That is it! I must tell Jesus!”
Upon returning to his study later that evening, the woman’s breakthrough phrase kept echoing through Hoffman’s mind. He immediately sat down at his desk and penned all four stanzas and the simple, soaring melody perfectly in one sitting, creating a lasting anthem of personal prayer for generations of believers.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
I must tell Jesus all of my trials,
I cannot bear these burdens alone;
In my distress He kindly will help me,
He ever loves and cares for His own.
Refrain
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.
2
I must tell Jesus all of my troubles,
He is a kind, compassionate friend;
If I but ask Him, He will deliver,
Make of my troubles quickly an end.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
Tempted and tried, I need a great Savior,
One who can help my burdens to bear;
I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus,
He all my cares and sorrows will share.
4
O how the world to evil allures me!
O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me
Over the world the victory to win.
Refrain
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.
