Fill My Cup, Lord: A Deep Meditation on Finding True Satisfaction (John 4:14) | Instrumental
Find rest and spiritual refreshment with this peaceful instrumental rendition of “Fill My Cup, Lord.” This arrangement is designed to help you lift up your “empty cup” to the only Source that can truly quench the thirsting of your soul.
The Scriptural Foundation
This beloved hymn is a direct reflection of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4:13-14:
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.'”
The lyrics contrast the “pleasures earthly things afford” with the “wondrous treasure” found in Christ. It is a prayer of surrender, asking the Bread of Heaven to feed us until we want no more.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Written in 1959 by Richard Blanchard, this hymn was born out of a moment of patient waiting. Blanchard was waiting for a young couple to arrive for a counseling session. As he waited at the church, he sat at the piano and began to think about the story of the woman at the well.
In less than 30 minutes, he penned the words and melody to what would become one of the most powerful “invitation” hymns in Christian history. Blanchard, who later suffered from severe physical health challenges, lived out the message of this song—finding that even when the body is weak, the Spirit can be filled and made whole.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
Like the woman at the well I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy;
And then I heard my Savior speaking:
“Draw from my well that never shall run dry.”
Chorus
Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord!
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;
Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more—
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!
2
There are millions in this world who are craving
The pleasures earthly things afford;
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
So, my brother, if the things this world gave you
Leave hungers that won’t pass away,
My blessed Lord will come and save you,
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray:
Chorus
Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord!
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;
Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more—
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!
