Find the strength to face whatever lies ahead with this peaceful instrumental rendition of “Because He Lives.” This arrangement is designed to provide a “calm assurance,” reminding you that because the grave is empty, you can face tomorrow with confidence and peace.
The Scriptural Foundation
This beloved hymn is a beautiful reflection of the promise Jesus made in John 14:19:
“Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”
The lyrics walk us through the journey of faith—from the “empty grave” that proves our Savior lives, to the “uncertain days” of raising a child, to the final victory as we “cross that river” into glory. It is a declaration that our future is not held by chance, but by a living Savior.
The Story Behind the Hymn
Written in 1971 by Bill and Gloria Gaither, this song was born during a time of intense personal and social unrest. Gloria was pregnant with their son, Benjy, and the world seemed to be falling apart with the Vietnam War and social upheaval.
As they contemplated bringing a new life into such an uncertain world, the Holy Spirit reminded them of the resurrection. They realized that “life is worth the living” not because the world is perfect, but because Jesus is alive. This hymn has since become a global beacon of hope for anyone facing an “uncertain tomorrow.”
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
God sent His son, they called Him Jesus;
He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!
Chorus
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!
2
How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and the joy he gives;
But greater still the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He lives!
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
And then one day I’ll cross that river,
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
And then as death gives way to vict’ry,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He reigns!
Chorus
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!
