Experience the breathtaking power of “How Great Thou Art.” This instrumental rendition is a journey through “awesome wonder,” designed to pull you away from the noise of the world and into the presence of the One who made the stars and hears the rolling thunder.
The Scriptural Foundation
This hymn is a soaring musical expression of Psalm 86:10:
“For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God.”
As you listen, let the melody guide your heart through the woods, forest glades, and lofty mountain grandeur, arriving ultimately at the foot of the cross where our “burden was gladly borne.”
The Story Behind the Global Anthem
Originally penned as a poem titled “O Store Gud” by Swedish pastor Carl Gustav Boberg in 1859 after a sudden thunderstorm, the hymn traveled across Europe before being translated from Russian into English by missionary Stuart K. Hine. It became a global phenomenon during the Billy Graham Crusades, cementing its place as a pillar of faith that proclaims God’s power throughout the universe.
Hymn Lyrics (Part I)
1
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Chorus
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
2
When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
Hymn Lyrics (Part II)
3
And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
4
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And there proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!”
